Despite its strong rectilinear form, a new house in a Buenos Aires suburb by local architect Luciano Kruk achieves an air of transparency and lightness. Designed for a young couple, the house—an elongated box surrounded by a grove of willow trees and a vast green lawn—is composed of a simple material palette: wood, glass, and concrete. While the concrete “roots the building in time and place,” says Kruk, wood details lend warmth, and generous glazing connects the inside with out.

The design for JCI’s Asia Headquarters relocates four previously separate business units into flexible work neighborhoods surrounding a five-story atrium that encourages collaboration and spontaneous encounters. Space reflects the organization’s culture of community and wellness and includes a gym, healthcare clinic, coffee shop, and canteen, as well as large windows that offer natural light and views of the Suzhou Creek.

Sag Harbor House

“Unprepossessing” is an apt way to describe the 1920s colonial revival house that Ted Porter found in 1999 in Sag Harbor, Long Island, and finished renovating for himself and his partner, Steve Godeke, last year. The New York–based architect with his own practice wanted a weekend home in this picturesque former whaling village, and the location, within walking distance of Main Street, was ideal.

The Meredith Residence

The Phoenix-based architect Wendell Burnette is known for designing buildings with a keen sense of place, whether it’s a galvanized zinc box of a house that sits on a flat Wisconsin crop field or the house shown here, on a five-acre site in a desert valley north of Cave Creek, Arizona. Designed as an emptynest home for Keith and Kim Meredith, the distinctive structure defines, Burnette says, “the core concept of how we live in the desert.” His clients, whom he describes as “into Eastern philosophy, paring down, and being close to nature,” had no interest in a conventional house.
